Content in the Snow?

May second. Time for blue skies, green grass, tulips, and daffodils.

May second.  I look out the window this morning at the absence of color as the newly green grass is covered in a thick, fluffy, white blanket of snow. The sky is a cloudy grey, the world white, even the brown of the tress is mostly covered in almost eight inches of snow.

The rumors of this storm at the beginning of the week threatened to pull me into a mood as grey as the sky. We had spent the weekend on the deck getting the gardens ready, all of us getting a little red on our cheeks and noses. The windows were open and fresh air was filling the house after a long hard winter. Another storm seemed unbearable.

I opened the door to our deck to snap the traditional "look at the snow" picture that so many are putting on Facebook today, and I was caught.

Caught by the beauty.

Caught by the peace.

Caught by the quiet.

Quickly I closed the door to shut out the cold, ready to get on with my day inside. Easier said than done. Something kept drawing me to the picturesque scene. It wasn't enough to observe the scene from my living room. I just stood in the driveway absorbing the quiet. It was early, the snow blowers were not yet in use. A chickadee flits from tree branch to growing and back again. The snow falling in snow globe fashion. Down the street, a tree branch cracks and falls to the ground.

I found every reason to be outside today, whether it was shoveling back-breaking heavy snow or shaking snow from tree limbs and branches. I couldn't come inside. The anticipated disgruntled feelings are replaced by a surprising calm and peace.

Yes, it is May.

Yes, I am more than ready for the gardens to come out of their slumber. Ready for the colorless landscape to be painted with brilliant colors.

However, for one more day, I am content.

I am at peace in the tranquil morning.

And it is good.

Growing

Something is happening deep inside.   There is change, but it is good.
New thought process, new feelings, new insights,
now seems to be the optimal environment for change.

I embrace this time of discovery, because it is only one part of growth.
The storms of life, that test strength and endurance are also a necessary part of growth.

But in the end, the two combined are what bring out
the potential,
the beauty,

and the strength.

Thoughts from Thursday

I wasn't able to get out and enjoy our record breaking temperatures today,
however, I was able to stop and enjoy the beautiful sunset tonight.

What is a thought from your Thursday?

Be Still

The hectic pace of life continues.  I find myself facing a week of busy schedules and non-stop activity.

This morning I read a post from Pete Wilson's blog that has spoke into my day.   As the day unfolds with many activities, it is easy to loose focus.   So in my few minutes between scheduled activities,

I sit.  And listen.  And observe.

A breeze causes the wind chime to sing a soft melody.

A mid-Summer flower is blooming defying the cooler nights with the threat of frost.

A bird is singing its God given song.

Colorful leaves fall to the ground, gently saying good-bye to the summer days.

A squirrel runs by on a mission.

The sun, warm for an October day, is shining in the brilliant blue sky.

A mini-van pulls up to the park, children run with laughter.

I pull myself up from my perch on the deck as duty calls.   Although the time marches on and the schedule cannot wait, I am grateful for the moments I had to sit and observe His creation.   I will cling to these moments in anticipation of more, because these are the moments that bring peace and stability to my day.

Thank you Pete for the reminder to be still.

Saying Goodbye For Now

Gazing out my kitchen window I see that the gardens are getting ready for their long winter nap.

The brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows have become muted and beginning to turn brown.   Leaves are scattered over the lawns and gardens.   Today was a perfect day for fall clean up.....

Everyone helped...

Even Pix had a job breaking up the sticks...

Once all of the leaves were raked up...

The fun began...

After the jumping ended, the leaves were then mulched for compost for next year's gardens...

The deck furniture was put into storage...

Ending the season of outdoor entertaining...

And for today, the clean up is done.

It is a bittersweet time of year for me as I love the green of the gardens and the parties on the deck, but know that year round gardening would not be as enjoyable.  The season change is a good thing, and I am learning to enjoy aspect of each one.  As we enter the season of white landscapes and snuggling up by the fireplace, I say good-bye for now to the gardens.

My View

There are times when language fails.   There are times when a photograph just doesn't compare.   Maybe a person with the gift of words could explain better.  Perhaps a professional photographer could do better.   Maybe it is just because it is mine that it is special and no amount of words or pictures would make it just as special to another person.   I don't know.   Here is my feeble attempt to share with you a view that I look forward to each year.

In my favorite room in my home, the window frames the reds, oranges, and yellows that I love this time of year.

Fall Beauty

Another beautiful day found me wanting to be outside again today.   On my walk this evening, I looked up in the trees and saw the sun highlighting one of my favorite trees.
